Instructions for 2015 1098-C

Here at E-File Magic, in sunny Portland, Oregon.  We are proactive.  So proactive that the 2015 Form 1098-C is already available for use in our application!  We offer two forms early every year; 1098-C and W-2G.  You may be asking yourself, “what exactly is Form 1098-C?”  Well, let me tell you… Form 1098-C is for contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes.  Basically, if you donate an airplane to a non-profit organization, they in turn will give you a 1098-C.  This form lists many things including; the year, make, and model of plane.  It will also list the fair market value and if the charitable organization sold the plane, how much they sold it for.

Say, you are a charitable organization who has just received a plane as a donation and you would like to know how to create a 2015 Form 1098-C. Well, let me tell you how easy using the E-File Magic app is; First, go to www.efilemagic.com, in the Dashboard you will see Create a Filer.  Click on the link and it will take you to the Filer page.  Click New and enter in the Charitable Organizations’ information.  Make sure you select 2015 as the filing year, and then click Save.  Next, you will see a navy blue bar towards the top of the screen, click 2. Recipients and in the drop down box click on Manage.  Once you are in the Manage Recipients screen, click on New and select Form 1098-C, enter in the information of the person who contributed the airplane to your charitable organization, click save.  And you are almost done!!!  All you need to do now is to click on 5. Release, make your payment and release!  The form been created and you can get back to enjoying all things summer.

2015 Instructions for Form 1098

Form 1098 is not a tricky form…. Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement is simply that, it’s the statement that reports the amount of interest paid, points paid on purchase of principal residence, and refund of overpaid interest (which must be a positive number).

In my experience, the trickiest part of the 1098 is where to enter in the negative interest amount, or the refunded interest amount.  This goes in Box 3 as a positive number.

If you would like some light reading for this 4th of July weekend, you can look over the instructions on Form 1098. i1098

1099-K, Instructions and a few helpful hints.

Whew! This year’s 1099 filing season has been a doozy!  Here at E-File Magic, January went by so fast, I’m not even sure if my coworkers or I walked away from our desks.  Thankfully, February is here, actually March is almost here, and we can get back to fun work, like talking about forms!

Today, I want to have a talk, a serious talk, about 1099-K’s.  Form 1099-K is an information form for certain payment transactions.  It’s a fairly new form and each year the IRS seems to either change, add or require more boxes to be filled in.   In my experience, the required box that tripped a lot of people up for the 2014 filing year was box 3, Number of Payment Transactions.  Which means the IRS would like you to disclose how many charges the Payee received.  Looking at the 2015 instructions (yes, they have already been released) the new required box for 2015 will be box 1b, Card Not Present Transactions. Which means, the IRS would like you to disclose how many transactions the Payee received without the card present.

The new 2015 instructions have already replaced the 2014 instructions from the IRS website.  But, I figured attaching instructions, even if they are for the next filing year are better than not attaching any. So here is the link to the 1099-K Form, enjoy!  i1099k
